Public Education's Grim Forecast

In a guest opinion, published in the Standard-Examiner, I painted a grim future for public education in the state of Utah.

"Overcrowded, underfunded and far apart, our public schools and universities will no longer be a place for academic curiosity, intellectual growth, critical thinking and social mobility. Instead, students will be taught unthinking nationalism and trained for low-skilled jobs while students with alternative educational opportunities will be rewarded favorably with unregulated tax dollars to fast-track themselves into the best careers irrespective of their merit."

I based this forecast on the path followed by the majority of Utah's Legislature where we see political and religious ideologies prioritized more often than what's best for student success.

My intention with this opinion publication was to encourage readers to engage with the local and state elected boards to demand quality public education. I urged readers that we must work together to get the change we want. I also outline the different levels in which we can get involved from our local school board, state school board, and state legislation.

"Out of a dark future, together we can champion light back into public education."
